Never read the original, but I got the first volume in English and quite enjoyed it. Although the translation did seem a bit..interesting...at times. So they did indeed take a lot of liberties with the dialogue? I also had to laugh because, for something set in New York, it's not very authentic-looking. Still, I think I'm already addicted. Get it, and I don't think you'll be disappointed.
I feel confident that TokyoPop is going to be releasing more manga of this kind in the near future. Their "authentic manga" seems to be an unquestionable success. When I was in the book store the other day, I noticed that Viz has started re-releasing their old manga at half-price ($9 I believe it was), because they are having trouble keeping up with the brisk business that TokyoPop is doing. It's just a matter of time before we hear that they have licensed other popular shoujo/BL stuff. They probably have quite a few in the works already (*hoping for Tokyo Babylon*).

True that it's not very authentic for New York, but then again, it is drawn and written by a Japanese mangaka.
